At Armory 2018, Tiwani Contemporary will present a selection of new and unseen works by Manuel Mathieu encompassing large semi-figurative paintings and lesser known drawings. This will be Mathieu's first solo art fair presentation in the USA.
The works will highlight recurring themes in the artist’s practice and the relationships he draws between these various areas of interest. Several works are inspired by specific events during the authoritarian rule of the Duvalier dynasty in Haiti between 1957 and 1986. Known as ‘Papa Doc’ and ‘Baby Doc’ respectively, François and Jean-Claude Duvalier’s dictatorships were exemplified by violence, trauma, and a coerced national amnesia that left events undiscussed and ultimately forgotten.
Titled after the American-Haitian novelist Edwige Danticat’s memoir, Brother I'm Dying (2017) depicts an anonymous detainee of a Haitian prison during the Duvalier regimes. Other works, such as At Sea (2017) or Nobody is Watching (2017) conjure up personal memories of place linked to Mathieu’s childhood on the island, exploring the artist's intimate connection with Haiti.
